Seven of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning

By Charrette Vachon

On this card, a farmer leans against his hoe, staring at a large, leafy bush that’s blooming with pentacles. One grows out of the soil at his feet, showing a prosperous yield and the results of his hard work. The bush is nearly as tall as he is, the leaves large and green, surely something to be satisfied with.

And yet despite the success, there’s a visible frown on the farmer’s face. He appears tired and disappointed instead of pleased with the results he cultivated. The sky above him is grey, as if hazy to reflect his dissatisfaction.

There’s nothing else on the Seven of Pentacles that appears to be of concern, nothing to imply there’s anything wrong with the crops yielded aside from the framer’s weary displeasure at what he’s seeing, leaving us to wonder if he was expecting something more from his work, or if he perhaps had hoped to grow something else entirely.

The Seven of Pentacles Card as a Person

As a person, the Seven of Pentacles card is someone who appears to be an overachiever to anyone watching them. They’re always busy with something, whether that’s work or school or their next big project, and yet to them, it never feels as though they’re doing enough. The Seven of Pentacles describes someone who feels lazy and unproductive anytime they need to take a break, and gets restless and anxious when there’s nothing for them to do. To them, a vacation feels like a waste of time.

Even when they do have something to work on, they tend to be perfectionists, and anything less than their best leaves them feeling disappointed in themselves and chastising themselves for not doing better. While this ensures they work hard and do their job well, it also leads to exhaustion and burnout.

It’s not all bad, however. The Seven of Pentacles is someone who always keeps the end result in mind, and recognizes the value of doing something now even if it won’t result in anything until later. This often leads to more lasting benefits than any amount of instant gratification can give.

What Does The Number 7 Card Mean

The Seven of Pentacles Upright

Upright, the Seven of Pentacles is a card of ambition and watching your hard work come to fruition. It’s not something that happens overnight, though, and it may require some trial and error and adjustments to make sure that the results come out the way you want them to.

It’s common to feel like you’ve hit a stopping point or like your progress has actually slowed instead of bloomed with the Seven of Pentacles, but that’s only to give you the time necessary to step back and make sure everything is shaping up to be a success. Once you’re sure everything is going to be satisfactory, or you’ve done what you needed to get back on track if it’s not, things will start moving again.

Love and Relationships

If you’re currently looking for a relationship, now is the time to think about what you want in a partner and what kind of relationship you would like to have. You may be thinking of how your past relationships have gone wrong, just make sure that instead of dwelling or becoming jaded, you use those lessons to show you what you want to avoid doing in the future. Relationships take work, so be patient with yourself as you navigate finding the right person, and be patient with them as you two learn how to navigate each other.

If you’re in a relationship, you’re being offered an opportunity to make sure it’s fully satisfying your needs and that it’s really what you want. If you’re not entirely happy with the direction it’s going or you feel like you’re missing something, it’s a good time to speak with your partner about what needs to be done differently. While it might not be anything causing problems in the relationship now, it will later on down the road if it’s not discussed while everyone is calm and adjustments are easier to make.

Once you’re certain everything checks out, expect the relationship to progress further in the near future, whether that be moving in together, marriage, or even starting a family.

Career

The Seven of Pentacles in the workplace is a sure sign that your efforts are starting to pay off and get noticed by others, but with that comes the question of where to go next. Now is the time to ask yourself if you’re satisfied with where you are and the work you’re doing, or if you would be happier putting your efforts towards something else. Do you want to take on a higher position with more rewarding challenges but less time to devote to other things, or are you content where you are so you can use your free time to pursue other passions? Whatever you decide, make sure it’s something you’ll be fully satisfied with.

Money

In a money reading, your hard work paying off is quite literal. The Seven of Pentacles means that the more effort you’ve put into something, the more money you’ll make with it, and it also portends to investments paying off or previous actions being rewarded. If you’ve lent someone money, they’ll soon be paying it back, possibly with a bit extra.

Health

If you’ve been looking for a good time to start eating healthier or to begin a workout routine, this is your sign to start. If you already have one in place, you’ve probably started to notice the benefits to your mood and physical well being, so keep it up. This is also a good card to get if you’re pregnant or looking to become pregnant.

The Seven of Pentacles Reversed

When reversed, the Seven of Pentacles is a card about dissatisfaction and disappointment. You’re probably not moving as quickly in life as want to be or feel you should be. You may have recently put a lot of effort into something that didn’t result in much or didn’t come out the way you wanted it to. It could be that you made a decision thinking it would make you happy only to realize it’s more work than you feel it’s worth. If you’ve been feeling impatient for perfect results, now is the time to step back and remember that perfection takes time and practice, and if you’re not willing to put in those things, you’ll have to accept less than perfect results.

Love and Relationships

Whether you’re in a relationship or looking for a relationship, the Seven of Pentacles reversed is a sign that you’re dissatisfied with how things are but aren’t putting in the effort necessary to get the result you want. There’s a good chance you’re so focused on work and money that you haven’t had the time or energy to work on your relationships, whether that’s in the form of putting yourself out there to find a partner, or whether that’s not spending enough time with the one you already have.

This is a bigger problem if you’re in a relationship. If you feel like things have been stagnating between you and your partner and you’re questioning where the relationship is going, take a look at what effort you’ve been putting in lately. The fix could be as simple as making time to reconnected with your partner and remind yourself of why you started the relationship in the first place.

Career

In a career reading, the Seven of Pentacles reversed says that you’ve been putting in too much work for too little reward. You no longer feel valued in the workplace despite bending over backwards to do your all. Not only is that incredibly disheartening, but burnout probably has your relationships and social life strained right now. It’s a good idea to take a step back and reevaluate your priorities, putting more of your focus into the things that bring you actual satisfaction.

Money

Similar to everything with your career, finding the Seven of Pentacles reversed in a money reading indicates that you’re putting in a lot of work for very little pay. In the ideal world, high-intensity jobs that require more effort and skill would yield better pay, but we don’t live in a world like that. Trying to make ends meet while suffering from the burnout of a demanding job will leave you stressed and struggling to balance the other aspects of your life.

Health

Burnout and stress are the two biggest factors when the Seven of Pentacles comes up reversed. You’ve been so busy working that you’ve neglected your physical health, especially if you’re the type that tends to work through lunch breaks or forgets meals. Stress and exhaustion will only compromise your health, and if you don’t pause to rest when you’re sick, your body has a hard time recovering and you could easily make things worse.

If you’re already sick or you’re expecting test results coming up, this could also be a warning that your health will continue to decline unless changes are made.

Your Past, Present, and Future

In the past position, the Seven of Pentacles represents the previous hard work you put in to something that you’ll soon be seeing the rewards of, and that the decisions you made before put you on your current path towards success.

In the present position, the Seven of Pentacles represents the need to step back from your work and make sure that you’re still on the right track to achieve the end result you’re hoping for. There’s a chance that you may need to adjust some things, and now is the time to do it.

In the future position, the Seven of Pentacles represents the culmination and final results of all your hard work. Just remember that the effort you put in will be reflected by the end product, so don’t cut corners or take the easy route.
